Introductory letter

Nadean Richards

Assignment 1 (introductory letter)

01/16/12

My name is Nadean Richards and I am from West Palm Beach Florida. I am 20 years old and just moved to Orlando a little over a week ago. Even though this is my first semester at UCF, I’m in my junior year of college. My first two years of school I attended Palm Beach State College to get my associates of arts degree.  I have been working since I was 16 and it feels weird to be unemployed but it is a much needed rest time. I took a semester off from school because of financial aid so now I’m trying to get used to being in school and doing homework. My parents were born in Barbados along with majority of my family. My family also lives in England which I would like to visit this year if I can. It is expensive to travel but my parents manage to plan something every year which takes stress off of working all the time. My current major is interdisciplinary studies, which requires two core courses, two areas of study, and one minor. My two core courses are cornerstone experience and capstone experience. My two areas of study include life/biomedical science and behavioral/ social science. My minor is health science because after I receive my bachelors of science degree I am going to pursue Nursing and get a bachelors and masters degree in that field.  I am interested in taking this class because its sounds really interesting and I would like to learn more about women and the struggles women have overcome in the past.  I would also like to explore the negative aspects people think about women and learn more about gender inequality. Hearing or reading different stories of this movement also interests me because I want to engage more on this subject. Gender is important to me because I do believe that women should be feminine and men should be masculine. I see different gender roles everyday and sometimes I just wonder why people express the opposite sex. It’s fine to feel like the opposite sex but dressing like it sometimes becomes overwhelming to see. Society is quick to judge and norms are starting to be broken more and more every day. It is good for people to express their feelings and attitudes without worrying about what people think of them.  Women’s studies can be a very diverse subject and I am excited to learn and explore it. My main goal this semester is to stay focused and enjoy learning more. I have read, agree, and understand the terms of the syllabus as well as the blog protocols.

  1. Nadean,
Welcome to the course and to UCF! It sounds like you have a great major and already have an obtainable career goal ahead of you.
We will talk in class about some of the ideas you are speaking of when you discuss the difference between sex and gender and also social norms relating to issues of dress and behavior. Hopefully by talking about this we will begin to unpack and understand what these mean and why it matters so much to people when people deviate from these norms.
I hope you get to travel to England this year. I have always wanted to go myself.
